For over a decade, Lieutenant Commander Erick Estela has served in scientific operations and research at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a US federal agency under the Department of Commerce. Erick’s journey at Harvard Kennedy School aims to enhance his leadership and policy-making skills and forge a path that bridges the gap between scientific research and policy implementation.

After completing his MPA at the Harvard Kennedy School, Erick will assume a leadership role as the Executive Officer aboard the NOAA Ship Reuben Lasker, a cutting-edge fisheries survey vessel based in San Diego, California. In this capacity, Erick will oversee the strategic utilization of this multi-million dollar platform, crew, and operational budget, ensuring its advanced technological capabilities are fully leveraged in environmental and marine research missions.
