KISS DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) was founded by Prof. Achyuta Samanta in 1992-93 with only 125 poor tribal students. At present, the number of students educated through KISS has touched more than 30,000, out of which nearly seven thousand have gone in for higher education at KISS. This institution has been accorded the Deemed University status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Govt. of India on 25/08/2017. KISS has become the first University in the entire world exclusively for tribal students. The University has introduced seven new innovative areas in the first phase with the approval of UGC to provide impetus to research in tribal legal studies and tribal rights, tribal resource management, tribal culture and heritage, tribal languages, tribal medicine and tribal technology, Indic studies etc. Students get residential education free of cost.

OUR VALUES

We are inspired by the foresight of our Founder, philanthropist Prof. (Dr.) Achyuta Samanta. With his support, we are guided by the following core values

To build KISS D-U as a premier institution of teaching, research, skill development and social entrepreneurship for the youth from the marginalized tribal communities as well as ensuring their cultural heritage and diversity.

  • To pursue academic excellence in innovative areas of studies pertaining to indigenous (tribal) life and culture.
  • To develop a creative and critical disposition among students towards their own communities and the world at large.
  • To empower the students with adequate domain knowledge, life skills, leadership and entrepreneurial abilities.
  • To encourage affirmation of linkages of the students to their cultural moorings and heritage by preserving, protecting, and promoting cultural diversity.
  • To promote indigenous knowledge in harmony with the imperatives of scientific rationality.
  • To recognize, foreground, commemorate and celebrate indigenous cultural memories of the empowering icons, events and processes.
  • To orient the indigenous communities towards a global perspective of the SDGs by equipping the students with the requisite skills and turning them into agents of social transformation.
  • To strive for continuous quality enhancement of academic and institutional governance to promote a culture of credibility, transparency and reliability.

Value scholarship, maintain a sense of integrity and create agents of change in the tribal communities.

The emblem of KISS-DU unfolds the underlying philosophy of Summum Bonum – a Latin expression for ‘the highest good’ – the singular and overriding end, which human beings ought to pursue. The emblem, encircled by the institution’s name and acronym, depicts three ebullient children reaching for three dots in the sky, that represent global challenges. This depicts our vision at KISS wherein we ensure the holistic growth of its students while prioritising their physical, mental and spiritual well-being and preparing them to become change-makers. It is our hope that our students will be empowered by the unique educational environment offered at KISS.
