The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), KISS-DU organized the 4th distinguished invited lecture under Viksit Bharat initiative on 1st May 2024. Dr. Bijay Kumar Sahu, Ph.D.  (JNU) Senior Regional Manager and Program Head (East), Associate Editor-Invention Intelligence, National Research Development Cooperation, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India delivered a lecture on “Promoting Innovation in Higher Education Institutions”. The intellectual discourse surrounded around India’s Universities role as a global economic power, particularly in the context of promoting innovation in order to transform lives.

Dr. Sahu emphasized on the fact that self-reliance is important for all individuals and especially in the vision of Viksit Bharat. We are today celebrating 75 years of Independence. He recounted how on World IPR Day, he had visited multiple universities to facilitate innovation. Further, he highlighted how policies like the NEP 2020, NISP and IPR policy along with initiatives taken by institutions can help improve India’s standing in the world innovation index. Further, Dr. Sahu also pointed out the NRDC’s role of facilitating the process. Innovation is market-driven, technology driven, and invention-driven. However, HEIs often ignore the value of intellectual property, he added.

There is thus a paradigm shift towards monetizing IPRs. HEIs are not just for teaching, they are for actually inspiring students to learn, and must be restructured accordingly.

The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks to the esteemed speaker, senior functionaries of the University, faculty members and other participants.
