Education for SDGs commitment to meaningful education

Does your university as a body have a commitment to meaningful education around the SDGs across the university, that is relevant and applicable to all students?

KISS-DU is an institution deeply committed to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). KISS-DU provides the educational opportunity to its students to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to promote sustainable development. The university undertakes research-providing solutions to challenges hindering sustainable development. The campus and major programmes are socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable. The courses aligned with sustainability and environmental education are taught at the university. This ensures that sustainability issues are integrated into curriculum and campus practice, relevant to students. In line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, KISS is taking committed steps at the campus, and at the community level.

The university specializes in education of Indigenous scholars and youths. This way, the university contributes in sharing its experience and model that can be replicated in different parts of the world taking into context its socio-cultural settings. KISS-DU provides a platform to conduct research on different Indigenous communities and other related issues. From its expertise of holistic education, it disseminates best practices to be replicated in society’s contextual milieu. KISS-DU is playing an important role in support of the UN’s Agenda to advance the economic, social, humanitarian, and cultural activities carried out by the UN – as a pillar for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for implementation of internationally agreed development goals.

The campus initiatives (such as solar power infrastructure, biogas, rainwater harvesting, mechanized steam based mega kitchen, Miyawaki Forest, accessible infrastructure) create an environment where students live and learn in sustainability – aware context. Through the KISS-DU Innovation Council and seven innovative schools at KISS-DU such as School of Indigenous Knowledge, Science & Technology; School of Tribal Legal Studies, etc.) KISS-DU offers courses and facilitates research programmes, which are aligned with the SDGs. The inclusion of a Book of Learning Outcome across postgraduate programme shows that sustainability is part of academic programmes. The subject mapping to sustainability/SDGs indicates that students across schools/programmes have access to courses that address key targets of the SDGs. The outcome-based learning framework means the institution is designing its entire curriculum around defined outcomes; including ethical and sustainability dimensions, which suggests a broad application across student cohorts.

Collaborative online learning programmes such as Self-directed Emotional Learning for Empathy and Kindness (SEEK), which has been initiated in collaboration with UNESCO-MGIEP, shows KISS-DU’s commitment to offer its learner a platform for knowledge on compassion and kindness. It promotes a compassionate and kindness driven learning atmosphere in its campus.

The research focus at the university is closely aligned with the SDGs, emphasizing inclusive education, empowerment of Indigenous communities, sustainable livelihoods, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. The university has published 152 Scopus/WoS indexed papers, 95 books, 5 patents and implemented 7 innovative projects with key collaborators. This shows the university’s commitment to create impactful knowledge that addresses challenges faced by marginalized communities.

KISS-DU implements several innovative projects that strongly align with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Kalinga Fellowship is a systemic change societal leadership platform to facilitate a breakthrough in thinking and strategy on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 that concerns gender equality. Within SDG5, the Fellowship has concentrated on issues related to gender-based violence, Mission Uday works toward community development and empowerment of Indigenous communities by creating youth change makers (SDG 1), Kanya Kiran, a nationwide awareness campaign, aims to end violence against girl child (SDG 5). The Aurora Project emphasizes innovation, sustainability, inclusion and democratic citizenship aligning with SDG 4 and SDG 8. These projects are testaments of KISS-DU’s commitment towards SDGs.

KISS-DU has been at the forefront of promoting sports and games as an integral part of holistic education. KISS-DU’s sports strategy is to create an environment where students can excel in sports as well as academics. Its goal is to develop sports talents among tribal students, provide them with opportunities to represent India at various international and national levels, and promote sports as a way of life. KISS-DU uses sports as a tool for social equity and inclusion.

In line with its commitment to the SDGs and sustainability, KISS-DU has collaborated with key stakeholder organization including government, such as Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, UN Agencies like UNDP, UNSSC, UNESCO-MGIEP, WFP, globally reputed higher education institutions such as University of Cambridge, University of East Anglia, UK, University of Malaga, Spain and international organization like JHPIEGO, and corporates, foundations etc., to co-create and implement programmes which meaningfully contributes to the achievement of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

The university regularly reviews its key programmes, initiatives through external assessment agencies and Green Audits regularly carried out by expert agencies, which shows the university’s commitment to provide an enabling ecosystem for SDG aligned learning.

KISS-DU demonstrates a solid institutional commitment to meaningful education around the SDGs, and this commitment appears to be relevant and applicable to its student body at large (especially of Indigenous/tribal youth).
