My Ph.D. journey at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Deemed to be University (KISS-DU), Bhubaneswar has been one of the most important phases of my life. This journey was not only about completing a degree, but also about learning discipline, patience, responsibility, and commitment towards research and society. Each year of my Ph.D. brought new challenges, experiences, and lessons that helped me grow as a researcher and as a person.
KISS Deemed to be University provided a supportive and inspiring academic environment. The university is known for its dedication to tribal education, social inclusion, and community development. Being a research scholar at such an institution motivated me to choose a socially relevant research topic and to work closely with tribal communities. The values of KISS helped me understand that research should not remain only in books, but should also contribute to the betterment of society.
“I take pride in stating that I am the first research scholar from the Noamundi Block as well as from my village in Jharkhand. This achievement is not only personal but also represents a milestone for my community, inspiring future generations to pursue higher education and research.”
First Year: Building the Foundation
The first year of my Ph.D. was mainly focused on learning and understanding. During this time, I studied my research area in detail and reviewed a large number of books, journals, and research articles. I learned about research methodology, data collection techniques, and academic writing. This year helped me develop clarity about my research topic and objectives.
Although the beginning was challenging, the guidance of my supervisor and faculty members helped me gain confidence. I slowly understood how to think critically, frame research questions, and identify research gaps. This year laid a strong foundation for my Ph.D. work and prepared me mentally for the long journey ahead.
Second Year: Giving Shape to Research
The second year was very important because my research work started taking proper shape. With the guidance of my supervisor, Dr. Ch. Sudipta Kishore Nanda, I finalized my research objectives, variables, and methodology. I learned how to prepare questionnaires and plan fieldwork.
This year taught me discipline and patience. I had to revise my work many times, but each correction helped me improve. I also learned the importance of ethical research, especially while working with tribal communities. The encouragement and guidance from the commerce faculty members helped me stay motivated during this phase
Third Year: Research Work
The third year was the most challenging and important phase of my Ph.D. journey. During this year, I carried out my research work through regular field visits in my research areas, including East Singhbhum and West Singhbhum districts of Jharkhand, and Rayagada district in Odisha. Working closely with the communities in these regions gave me valuable practical experience and a deeper understanding of my research topic.
In Rayagada district, Odisha, I received strong support from the Mr. Pramod Kumar Patra, Additional Registrar & Additional CEO at KISS. He helped me greatly during my research work and guided me at different stages. His cooperation and support made my field visits smoother and more organized.
The research work involved visiting remote tribal areas and interacting with local communities. Although there were many challenges such as long travel, poor transportation, and limited facilities, these experiences helped me understand the real-life problems and socio-economic conditions of the people. This year strengthened my confidence, practical knowledge, and commitment to my research.
Fourth Year: Writing and Completion
The fourth year was mainly focused on writing and completing my thesis. This phase required full concentration and regular effort. I wrote chapters, revised them many times, and improved my work based on my supervisor’s suggestions.
Although this year was stressful, it also gave me a sense of satisfaction and achievement. Completing the thesis made me feel proud of my hard work and dedication. The continuous support of my supervisor and faculty members helped me complete my Ph.D. successfully. Overall, my four-year Ph.D. journey at KISS Deemed to be University was a life-changing experience. It taught me the value of hard work, patience, and commitment.
I express my deepest sense of gratitude and profound respect to Dr. Achyuta Samanta Sir, Hon’ble Founder of KISS and KIIT, whose visionary leadership, humanitarian philosophy, and lifelong dedication to the empowerment of tribal and marginalized communities have made institutions like KISS Deemed to be University, a global model of inclusive and value-based education. His commitment to transforming lives through education inspired me to pursue socially relevant research and to serve society through academic work. Under his guidance and vision, KISS has become not just an educational institution but a movement that nurtures knowledge, ethics, and social responsibility. I consider it a great privilege and honor to have pursued my Ph.D. in an institution founded by such an extraordinary educationist, philanthropist, and social reformer. His ideals of compassion, service, and excellence will continue to guide my academic journey and life ahead.
I am deeply thankful to my supervisor, faculty members, and fellow research scholars for their guidance, encouragement, and support throughout my journey. This Ph.D. journey will always remain a special and memorable chapter of my life.
