The School of Comparative Indic Studies and Tribal Science in collaboration with the Centre for Indigenous Science and Technology, KISS Deemed to be University (KISS-DU), successfully organized a One-Day Hands-on Workshop on Bioinformatics on 16th January 2026.

The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Dr. Debasis Mohapatra, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, School of Indic Studies and Tribal Science, KISS-DU, who highlighted the importance of Bioinformatics in contemporary life sciences research and interdisciplinary learning. This was followed by the felicitation of the invited resource person, acknowledging their academic contributions and presence.

In his deliberation, Dr. Budheswar Dehury, Assistant Professor, Department of Bioinformatics, Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal provided valuable insights into computational approaches, databases, and bioinformatics tools used in modern drug development. Speaking in turn, Er. Atul Nag, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, School of Indigenous Knowledge Science and Technology, KISS-DU, presented on Gene Discovery and Phylogeny Analysis, explaining theoretical concepts along with their practical relevance in evolutionary and genomic studies using SOD gene as example. The workshop further included hands-on demonstrations on online bioinformatics tools. Mr. Raju Mallick, KISS-DU, demonstrated tools for gene structure analysis and chromosome location, followed by Mr. Amar Kumar Muska, KISS-DU, who demonstrated protein domain search tools, enabling participants to understand functional annotation of proteins. Both the deliberations touched upon, two pertinent Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).

An interactive session with students helped participants discuss applications of bioinformatics in research and higher studies. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the resource persons, organizers, participants, and the IT Cell for their technical support.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from postgraduate students and faculty members, and Dr. Prashanta Kumar Routray, Registrar emphasized that such initiatives significantly enhance practical skills, research orientation, and interdisciplinary understanding within the academic community.
