The World Poetry Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and literary fervour on 21st March 2026 at 4:00 PM in the Auditorium, Campus 4 of KISS Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The event was organised by the School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures (Departments of English, Hindi, Odia, Sanskrit and Santali) in association with the Centre for Folklore Studies, Centre for Translation Studies, NEP SAARTHI Cell, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the University.

The programme commenced with the inauguration of a Wall Magazine by the distinguished dignitaries present on the occasion, marking a creative beginning to the celebration. Following the inauguration of the Wall Magazine, the Student Choir of School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures, KISS-DU, presented a melodious welcome song, creating an ambience of warmth and reverence. This was followed by an insightful address on the significance of World Poetry Day by Dr. Rasmita Tripathy, Associate Professor, Head Centre for Folklore Studies, and Head Department of Odia, who highlighted the role of poetry as a universal medium of expression that transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Among others, Dr. Chittaranjan Bhoi, Dean, School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures, the Heads of various Departments, students and scholars under School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures attended the occasion. The event was graced by renowned poets including Dr. Phani Mohanty (Odia), Dr. Goparanjan Mishra (English), Mr. Bikramaditya Singh (Hindi), Professor Prafulla Kumar Mishra (Sanskrit), Dr. Arjun Charan Singh (Santali) and Professor Sasanka Sekhar Chudamani (Odia).

The formal addresses began with Dr. Prashanta Kumar Routray, Registrar of KISS-DU, who eloquently spoke about the deep connection between poetry and one’s mother tongue, emphasising how poetry nurtures cultural identity and emotional depth. Professor Kashi Nath Jena, Pro Vice Chancellor, further enriched the session by reflecting on poetry as a timeless art form that preserves human experiences and values across generations.

The distinguished guests then shared their perspectives, each offering unique insights into poetry and its relevance in contemporary society. Professor Sasanka Sekhar Chudamani emphasised the aesthetic beauty and philosophical depth of poetry, particularly in Odia literature. Professor Prafulla Kumar Mishra highlighted the classical richness of Sanskrit poetry and its enduring legacy. Mr. Bikramaditya Singh spoke about the evolving nature of Hindi poetry and its resonance with modern social realities. Dr. Arjun Charan Singh drew attention to the oral traditions of Santali poetry and its role in preserving indigenous culture. Dr. Goparanjan Mishra discussed the global appeal of English poetry and its adaptability, while Dr. Phani Mohanty passionately underlined the emotional power and lyrical elegance of Odia poetry.

Interspersed with these enlightening speeches were recitations of self-composed poems by students and faculty Members of School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures, which added vibrancy and creative expression to the event. The poems reflected diverse themes such as identity, nature, culture, and human emotions, showcasing the literary talent within the institution. The celebration continued with further poetic recitations followed by a cultural programme, where students performed a graceful traditional dance set to traditional tribal music, dressed in vibrant ethnic attire. The performance beautifully depicted the rich cultural heritage and artistic spirit of tribal communities. The Deans of all the Schools and Centre Heads of the University were also present on the occasion, adding to the significance of the event.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Debahuti Pattnaik, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, participants, and organisers for making the programme a grand success. The celebration of World Poetry Day at KISS-DU thus stood as a testament to the enduring power of poetry in fostering cultural dialogue, creativity, and unity across languages and traditions.
