Introduction
Paulus Oreya, a PhD student at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), recently embarked on his first international trip to the University of Malaga, Spain, under the KA-171 Student Mobility Programme funded by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union. This journey provided him with invaluable experiences and lessons, shaping his worldview and enriching his life. Paulus expresses his heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Founder of KISS and KIIT for nominating him for this prestigious programme and giving him the opportunity to represent KISS-DU on a global stage.
Journey So Far
The journey began from Bhubaneswar to Malaga, with the purpose of gaining international academic experience, sharing cross-cultural insights, and exploring new places. Paulus recounts his pre-trip experience, which included receiving his visa in time after visiting the Passport Seva and Visa office in Delhi for document verification. His excitement knew no bounds when he finally received the visa. On 17th March 2024, with butterflies in his stomach, he departed from his home country, ensuring he caught his connecting flights on time.
First Impressions
Upon arrival in Spain, Paulus was warmly received by his supervisor, Prof. Jose Jesus Delgado Pena, at the airport. The next day, they visited the International Relations Office of the University of Malaga to complete his joining formalities. Paulus was thrilled to meet Prof. Pena and appreciated his kindness in picking him up from the airport.
Experience and Adventures
During his stay, Paulus commuted to the Faculty of Education and Science via metro, which was a unique experience for him. He made new friends from Morocco, China, Spain, and Portugal. The month of April was particularly enjoyable due to the Easter festival. Paulus visited various places, including the beach area, the Picasso Museum, Alcazaba, Granada, Cordoba, Nerja, and Frigiliana.
Barriers Faced
Despite the friendly and kind nature of the local people, Paulus faced language barriers as English was not widely spoken. He managed to communicate using the Duolingo App and non-verbal communication. Adapting to the language, weather, culture, and food took some time, but he eventually acclimatized.
Academics and Cultural Exchange: An Unforgettable Experience
Paulus shared literature on KISS Deemed to be University and highlighted distinctive programs such as the “Kanya Kiran” Program and the “Art of Giving” philosophy founded by Hon’ble Founder Dr. Samanta. He also had the opportunity to taste local cuisine and delicacies. In relation to his research, Paulus made a presentation at an international seminar and submitted a chapter for publication, which he hopes will add value to his Ph.D. work. During the last few days of his visit, the University of Malaga organized an international food festival and dance programmes, including Flamenco. Paulus showcased rich Indian culture by wearing ethnic attire and cooking Indian dishes for the food festival.
Reflection and Takeaways
Paulus describes his overall experience as amazing. He found the Spanish people to be respectful, welcoming, and inclusive, regardless of country, color, or gender. As he packed his suitcases, he ensured to pack memories of his 5-month stay. He takes back experiences and exposure from one of the best public universities in the world.
Conclusion
Paulus extends his heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Founder of KISS and KIIT, Professor Achyuta Samanta, his Professors, Supervisors, and the International Relations Office of the University of Malaga for their support. He also thanks the KA-171 Project funded by the ERASMUS+ Programme of the European Union for providing him with international exposure that will elevate his career growth.
