The ongoing KISS Science and Technology Innovation (STI) Hub for Tribals Project at KISS-DU funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India organized an Capacity Building cum Training Programme in Khadisole Panchayat, Baripada Block, Mayurbhanj District from 13th to 15th November 2025. The objective of the programme was to promote social and economic development among tribal communities by encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship based on their indigenous knowledge systems. The training focused on sustainable livelihood opportunities such as vermicomposting and compost technology, and value-added product development from Guduchi, Bhumiamla, Sajana (Moringa) and Gotu Kola for nutraceutical and therapeutic purposes.

A total of 75 beneficiaries actively participated in the training sessions spread across three days gaining both theoretical and practical exposure. The initiative aimed to inspire participants to establish micro-enterprises and start-ups, contributing to grassroots-level socio-economic transformation. The first day witnessed Introduction, field visits, and networking, followed by Vermicompost technology and start-up awareness on the second day and Value-added products from indigenous herbs and nutritional benefits on the concluding day.

Experts demonstrated processing techniques and discussed the nutritional importance and future scope of herbal-based products in local and national markets.
Participants were encouraged to explore innovative approaches for improving the value chain and creating livelihood opportunities. The major outcomes included 75 beneficiaries, major focus areas like vermicompost and compost technology, nutraceutical and therapeutic value-added products, and entrepreneurship and the impact were enhanced awareness on sustainable livelihoods and innovation-based community development.

KISS, since its inception has been working on empowering indigenous communities through education and entrepreneurial activities. It believes in the power of self-reliance and creating self-employment opportunities for the tribals. This project is a shining example of the community outreach activities of KISS-DU.
