The Department of Food Science, under the School of Comparative Indic Studies and Technology Science, KISS-DU observed World Food Day on 16th October 2025. The World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on 16th October to commemorate the date of founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization I 1945.The events under the celebration were thoughtfully curated keeping in mind this year’s theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and Better Future”. This event was organized with the aim of addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). Since its inception, the University has been working on meeting all the 17 SDGs and has been relentlessly contributing towards UN Agenda 2030.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 70 students pursuing M.Sc. and B.Sc. programs in Food Science. The observation was graced by Dr. Vimal Pandey, Dean of CISTS, KISS-DU, and Dr. R. K. Mishra, who attended the event as the Chief Guest on the occasion.

The highlight of the day was a stimulating debate competition centered on the crucial topic of food safety and food waste. Three students delivered compelling arguments, demonstrating their deep understanding of contemporary food safety issues, regulatory frameworks, and the importance of maintaining hygiene standards throughout the food supply chain. The debate sparked engaging discussions among participants and highlighted the critical role of food scientists in ensuring public health.

Adding a creative dimension to the observation, Dr. Iswarkanti Murmu from the Department of Hindi, School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatures presented a composed song dedicated to food producers including the farmers and agricultural workers who form the backbone of our food systems.

In his address, Dr. Vimal Pandey stressed the significance of World Food Day in raising awareness about hunger, malnutrition, food waste and sustainable food production. He encouraged students to become agents of change in addressing food security challenges facing India and the world. In his deliberation, Dr. Pandey also highlighted the food waste management system being followed at KISS-DU.

Dr. R. K. Mishra shared insights on emerging trends in food science and technology, inspiring students to pursue innovation and research in creating safer, more nutritious, and sustainable food systems.
