A group of 50 Geography students under the School of Tribal Resource Management (STRM) from KISS-DU accompanied by two faculty members, visited the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar on 27th September 2024. The visit was an enriching educational experience, offering students an invaluable opportunity to gain practical insights into meteorological science.

Dr. Manorama Mohanty, Director, IMD provided a detailed overview of various meteorological instruments and technologies used to monitor weather patterns and predict climatic changes. Students learned about how data is collected through satellite imaging, radars, and ground-based sensors, and how this information is analyzed to generate accurate weather forecasts. Special emphasis was given to the significance of meteorology in disaster management, especially in cyclone-prone areas like Odisha. The visit also included a tour of the forecasting and data collection facilities, where students were able to see live weather data being processed.

Dr. Arpana Premi Lina Oraon, Associate Professor and Dean, STRM and Mrs. Saurava Goswami, Faculty in Geography expressed her appreciation for the IMD’s efforts in educating the students and emphasized the importance of such practical exposure for their academic growth also this visit has not only deepened the students’ understanding of meteorological science but also highlighted its crucial role in the safety and well-being of our communities, especially in tribal regions prone to natural calamities.

The students left with a newfound appreciation for the complexity of weather forecasting and its significance in environmental studies and disaster preparedness. The visit has further strengthened KISS Deemed to be University’s commitment to providing hands-on learning experiences for its students, shaping them into knowledgeable and responsible citizens. This insightful visit to IMD Bhubaneswar marks a significant step in enhancing the students’ understanding of meteorological systems, aligning with KISS-DU’s mission to provide high-quality education to tribal students.
