Department of Social Work, School of TLSTR, KISS-DU proudly produces its first Ph.D.

Ms. Sasmita Patra Ph.D. Scholar of Social Work, School of Tribal Legal Studies and Tribal Rights, (TLSTR) KISS-DU was awarded Ph.D. on 23^rd September 2024. The title of her thesis was “Traditional Medicine Practice and its Impact on Tribal Women: A Case Study of Kalahandi District of Odisha” under the supervision of Dr. Pagyan Mohanty, Associate Professor and Dean, STLSTR, KISS-DU.

The defense was graced by the External Examiner Professor Asok Kumar Sarkar, Department of Social Work, Viswa Bharati Central University of Shantiniketan. Dr. Patra belongs to the Gond Tribe of Odisha and has the credit of being the first Ph.D. holder in her entire Panchayat. She belongs to the Kalahandi District of Odisha and in a personal interaction, she expressed the desire to pursue a career in teaching and be a change maker by initiating policy changes in the area of traditional medicine.

Through her research work she wishes to change the blind believes associated with traditional medicine and highlight the benefits of using traditional mode of treatment through proper way.
