A Debate Competition on the theme “Biodiversity Conservation versus Development” was jointly organized by the Odisha Biodiversity Board, the School of Comparative Indic Studies and Tribal Science, and the Centre for Indigenous Science and Technology, at KISS Deemed to be University on 2nd May 2025.
The event witnessed active participation from 60 enthusiastic students, who passionately articulated their views on the pressing need to strike a balance between ecological conservation and developmental aspirations. A noteworthy highlight was the emphasis by many participants on indigenous knowledge systems and community-based solutions for conserving biodiversity, reflecting the deep-rooted environmental awareness and traditional wisdom among tribal communities. The session was chaired by Dr. Vimal Pandey, Dean, School of Comparative Indic Studies and Tribal Science, who appreciated the insightful arguments presented by the students and encouraged the integration of indigenous practices into mainstream conservation strategies.
After a competitive round of deliberations, three students were adjudged as the best speakers and were awarded prizes for their exceptional articulation, critical thinking, and relevance to the theme. These top performers will represent KISS-DU at the upcoming Inter-University Debate Challenge being organized by the Odisha Biodiversity Board on 6th May 2025.
The event successfully fostered awareness, dialogue, and innovative ideas on biodiversity conservation among young minds, while promoting the integration of tribal knowledge systems in sustainable development discourses.
