The Department of Odia, School of Comparative Tribal Languages and Literatuures, KISS Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, proudly records the successful completion of the Ph.D. Viva-Voce Examination of Mr. Uttara Kumar Bariha, who was subsequently awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) on 22nd May 2026. He pursued his doctoral research under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Rasmita Tripathy, Associate Professor and HoD, Department of Odia and became the ninth research scholar to earn a Ph.D. degree under her mentorship. His thesis, entitled “Binjhal Janajatira Loka Sahitya o Loka Sanskruti: Eka Tattwika Alochana” (Folk Literature and Folk Culture of the Binjhal Tribe: A Theoretical Analysis), makes a significant contribution to the study of tribal literature, folklore, and indigenous culture in Odisha.

The Open Defense Ph.D. Viva-Voce was held in the presence of eminent academicians, faculty members, and research scholars. During the presentation, Mr. Bariha effectively explained the objectives, methodology, findings, and significance of his research. He confidently addressed the questions and observations raised by the experts and participants, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the subject and a strong command over his research area.

The viva-voce examination was conducted in the presence of Professor Manindra Kumar Meher, External Examiner, Utkal University(Retd.); Prof. Bijoy Satpathy, Professor Emeritus and Vice Chancellor’s Nominee, KISS Deemed to be University; and the Research Scrutiny Committee members, Dr. Amulya Ratna Nanda and Dr. Lusi Priyadarshini Nayak. The experts appreciated the originality, academic rigor, and cultural relevance of the research. They observed that the study provides valuable documentation and theoretical interpretation of the folk literature and cultural traditions of the Binjhal tribe, thereby contributing to the preservation and promotion of Odisha’s indigenous heritage.

The examiners and committee members commended the scholar’s dedication, extensive fieldwork, and analytical approach. They noted that the research would serve as an important reference for future studies in folklore, tribal studies, cultural anthropology, and Odia literature. The audience also appreciated the significance of the work in bringing greater academic attention to the rich cultural traditions of tribal communities.

While sharing his personal feelings, Dr Bariha said that he is grateful to the University and extends gratitude to Professor Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT, KISS, and KIMS, for fostering a vibrant research environment.
