The Department of Political Science, School of tribal Culture, Philosophy and Eco-Spiritualism in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, KISS-DU organized a Distinguished invited Lecture on the topic “India and the Global South” on 30th August 2025. Dr Suwalal Jangu, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Mizoram University was invited as the resource person.
Dr. Jangu spoke about Raja Ram Mohan Rao and his contribution in presenting India before the world. He added that Swami Vivekananda also put India strongly on the global map because of his path-breaking speech at the World Religious Congress in Chicago. While talking about Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Jangu threw light on how Tagore had also contributed to the concept of cosmopolitanism.
He also spoke about Mahatma Gandhi and his role in making India known at the global stage through his message of peace and non-violence. His support for Khilafat Movement in 1916 was a strategic foray into global arena. He also spoke about the contributions of M.N Roy and Ras Bihari Bose making India’s presence felt at the global stage. The speaker also mentioned about Subash Chandra Bose and his role in forging an alliance with Japan to liberate India from British rule.
Adding to his chain of thoughts, Dr. Jangu also talk about eminent personalities like Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit and Babu Jagjivan Ram who represented India at UN among few others. He mentioned about the journey of NAM and India’s role in the movement that brought all the developing nations together because of common economic interest, he added.
He concluded his deliberation by highlighting BRICS, G-20 and UN and how they represent the growing aspiration of global south that comprised mostly developing nations. Dr. Jangu opined that India could lead the global south, but it needs to have more economic clout to make this prospect a reality, he pointed.
