KISS-DU Organizes a Session on “Career Opportunities in the Company Secretary Profession”

The session on “Career Opportunities in the Company Secretary Profession” was jointly organized by the Bhubaneswar Chapter of the Eastern India Regional Council (EIRC) of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in collaboration with the Department of Commerce, School of Tribal Resource Management (STRM), Centre for Indigenous Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha on 4^th  August 2026.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by Dr. Snigdharani Panda, Joint Registrar and Director, IQAC, KISS Deemed to be University. In her address, she emphasized the significance of the session in creating awareness among students about the Company Secretary profession and its growing relevance in today’s corporate environment. The dignitaries felicitated the guest speaker, CS Tanmay Kumar Sahu, with a bouquet and memento.

The technical session was conducted by CS Tanmay Kumar Sahu, who delivered an insightful presentation on the profession of Company Secretary. He explained the roles and responsibilities of a Company Secretary, the wide range of career opportunities available in the profession, and the various academic and professional facilities provided by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). His interactive presentation enabled students to gain a clear understanding of the profession and the pathway to becoming a Company Secretary.

The programme was followed by an engaging question-and-answer session, during which students actively interacted with the resource person.

Mr. Biswanath Murmu, a postgraduate student of Commerce, asked whether students should pursue Chartered Accountancy (CA) or Company Secretaryship (CS) as a career. In response, CS Tanmay Kumar Sahu explained the distinct roles, responsibilities, and career prospects associated with both professions. He emphasized that both CA and CS are highly respected professions and advised students to choose the career that best aligns with their interests and aptitude.

Mr. Bhuteswar Patra, a Ph.D. scholar in Commerce, enquired about the challenges faced by Company Secretaries during meetings of the Board of Directors (BOD). Responding to the query, the speaker elaborated on the practical responsibilities of a Company Secretary within an organization and explained how they ensure corporate governance, statutory compliance, and effective coordination during board meetings.

Another question was raised by Mr. Sarat Chandra Murmu, an M.Com. student, regarding the availability of online and offline classes offered by ICSI and the course fee structure. The resource person provided a detailed and easy-to-understand explanation of the learning modes, admission process, and fee structure, thereby addressing the student’s concerns comprehensively.

The session concluded with remarks by Dr. Arpana Premi Lina Oraon, Dean-cum-Director of the Research and Development Cell, KISS Deemed to be University. She highlighted the importance of career planning and encouraged students to explore diverse professional opportunities while pursuing their academic goals.

The programme concluded with the formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Parikshita Khatua, Head of the Department of Commerce. In his address, he expressed sincere gratitude to the guest speaker for delivering an informative and inspiring session. He also thanked the dignitaries, faculty members, research scholars, and students for their enthusiastic participation and active engagement.
