The Background behind establishing Bhagwan Birsa Munda Research Chair at KISS-DU
Bhagwan Birsa Munda, revered as the God of tribal (Bhagwan Birsa), was a remarkable freedom fighter and charismatic leader from the nineteenth century. He courageously stood against the injustices faced by the tribal communities during the British Raj. Bhagwan Birsa Munda was a vocal advocate against British oppression, fighting to protect tribal land and religion. His primary goal was to end British political dominance and liberate the motherland from colonial rule.
Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s unwavering commitment to the tribal cause led him to mobilize his community, inspiring them to resist oppression with courage and determination. His movement against the British had a profound impact, directly leading to the initiation of settlement and survey operations in the Ranchi district. His contributions extended beyond the fight against British rule; he also played a crucial role in fostering a sense of nationalism among the tribes of the Chotanagpur region.
Bhagwan Birsa Munda devoted his entire life to the upliftment of the tribal community, and his sacrifices are deserving of recognition. Today, the tribals of the India honor him as “Dharti Abba” (Father of the Earth). The establishment of a chair in his memory at the KISS Deemed to be University is a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy and the struggles he undertook for his people.
