The Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of KISS Deemed to be University organised a MIC-driven activity on 24 August 2026 to watch the session titled “India’s IPR Policy and Provisions for Startups, Inventors and Innovators: Accelerating the IP Landscape in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).” The online session, was conducted by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell.
The session was addressed by Professor (Dr.) Unnat P. Pandit, Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, Government of India. He explained how India’s National IPR Policy, the National Education Policy, Startup India initiatives and institution-level innovation policies can help universities strengthen intellectual property creation, protection and commercialization.
Professor Pandit highlighted the rapid growth of domestic patent filing and the expanding contribution of higher educational institutions to India’s innovation ecosystem. He urged institutions to move beyond merely filing patent applications by seeking timely publication and examination, building clear institutional IPR and technology-transfer policies, and supporting researchers from problem identification and pre-incubation through incubation, investment and commercialization.
The discussion also introduced support mechanisms such as the KAPILA programme, the National IP Awareness Mission, IP Mitra services, the IP diagnostic tool and the Startup Intellectual Property Protection framework. Participants were encouraged to use incubation centres, seed and angel funding opportunities, Patent Cooperation Treaty pathways and government-supported intellectual property services to transform promising ideas into market-ready innovations and startups.
The interactive session addressed practical questions on technology transfer, international patent protection, selecting IP professionals, revenue sharing, and designing balanced institutional IPR policies. The activity proved particularly useful for faculty members, researchers, students, innovators, entrepreneurs, startups, IIC members, R&D Cell and Incubation Centre. The participation of KISS-DU IIC members reinforced the University’s commitment to nurturing IP awareness, innovation-led research and an enabling startup ecosystem.
