The Department of Economics, School of Tribal Resource Management (STRM) organized a seminar on the theme ‘Impact of Climate Change on Economic Growth and Development” on 8th November 2024. The event saw active participation, with around 20 students. They presented insightful papers on various aspects of how climate change influences economic progress and challenges sustainable development.
Dr. Arpana Premi Lina Oraon, Associate Professor and Dean graced the occasion as the guest of honor, in presence of Dr. Parikhita Khatua, Head, Department of Commerce, (HOD, Dr. Sanjeeta Kumari Devi, Dr. Gopal Krishna Jena, Mrs. Sangita Mishara and Dr. Sushanta Kumar Tarai, offering valuable insights into the urgency of climate resilience for economic stability. The research scholars contributed to the discussions and shared their academic perspectives.
The student presentations covered a wide range of sub-topics, from the economic costs of climate-related disasters to the role of policy interventions in promoting green growth. Among the seminar’s key findings were practical steps to mitigate climate impact, such as tree plantation, reduced vehicle emissions, proper use of electricity and water, awareness around e-vehicles, and encouragement for each person to plant at least one tree. The seminar also highlighted the need to reduce the use of polythene and plastic bags to minimize environmental harm. The key take away point from the deliberations was the focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations with special emphasis on SDG – 13 Climate Change and how the youth can contribute towards meeting the 2030 Agenda.
The event concluded with question answer session conducted by Dr. Sushanta Kumar Tarai, and a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Sangita Mishra, marking the successful completion of an impactful seminar that reinforced our department’s commitment to addressing global challenges through academic engagement and research
